WBCL News StoriesElmhurst Meeting Marked With Emotion
Anger and frustration marked last night’s meeting on the possible closure of Elmhurst High School. A crowd of 700 showed up at at the school, many repeatedly interrupting Superintendent Dr. Wendy Robinson as she explained why Elmhurst was selected to close. A similar public meeting will be held at Pleasant Center Elementary School next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Closing In On Health Care
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says
that key Democrats are close to an agreement on health care
legislation. Officials says any final deal would hinge on cost
estimates from the Congressional Budget Office.
City Facade Grants Awarded
Thirteen Fort Wayne businesses will be getting a face lift, thanks to 260 thousand dollars in city facade grants. Mayor Tom Henry yesterday announced recipients, who will receive dollar-for-dollar matching grants to beautify their storefronts with improved landscaping, signage, lighting and window treatments.
Senate Approves Unemployment Extension
The Senate has approved legislation that
will provide extended unemployment benefits. The extension of key
elements of last year's economic stimulus measure won the support
of all but one Democrat. Six Republicans voted yes.
Lawton Skatepark Opens
The Lawton Skatepark has opened for the season. Protective equipment is required. Hours are daily 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Lawton Park, corner of Clinton and Fourth downtown.
